Hyderabad:Andhra Pradesh plans to establish a nuclear plant of 2,000 MW capacity, the first such initiative by any state in the wake of the Indo-US nuclear agreement.

The state government has asked the state-run Andhra Pradesh Generation Corp (AP Genco) to submit a preliminary report in a week, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy told reporters here Thursday night.

Within hours of the approval of the US Senate overwhelmingly approving the India-US civil nuclear deal, Reddy held a meeting with AP Genco officials and asked them to prepare a report.

"We have asked AP Genco to furnish its report within one week," the chief minister said.

"The nuclear plant will be established by AP Genco on a regular commercial and not on an experimental basis," he added.

The chief minister has also apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the state's intention to set up the nuclear plant.

This is the first such initiative by any state government to leverage the scope for establishment of atomic power plants in the wake of the agreement.

"The nuclear plant will help meet ever-rising demand for power without affecting the environment and will boost industrial and agricultural productivity," Reddy said.

He said the cost of the project and other details would be known only after AP Genco submitted a preliminary report.

AP Genco is already generating nearly 6,600 MW of power, including 3,586 MW through hydel stations.

A nuclear power plant was proposed to be set up at Nagarjunasagar by the centre about two decades ago, but it did not materialise. Another proposal for a plant in Srikakulam district is also in limbo.
