Fat packages not enough; executives now want luxe cars too

Bangalore: Apart from hefty salary packages and other offerings, CEOs in India now demand costliest cars too as a part of their compensation. They choose expensive latest models such as Mercedes-Benz, Beamers, Audis, Porsches and Rolls-Royce.

The car mania is not restricted to a particular sector. ITes, BPO, banking, aviation and energy are among the major sectors from which CEOs ask for latest model cars, reported The Economic Times. Recently, a newly appointed CEO of a major retail company was offered a hefty salary package, but his demands went much beyond just monetary considerations. When he asked for a Mercedes SLK 500 to drive to work, the company was happy to oblige.

"We are selling around 30 percent of our cars to corporate customers. We have re-jigged some of our models like the 320i, which is more chauffeur driven and offers more space at the rear. In the second year of operation in India, we have seen a sizeable shift towards the larger and expensive, 5Series coming in the Rs 40 to Rs 50 lakh bracket," says Peter Kronschnabel, President, BMW India.

Head hunting firms also are in the opinion that cars are the crore-competence at the top of the job heap. "For CXOs, cars speak volumes. And unlike in the past, the choice for the 'executive car' now goes beyond Mercs to Audis to BMWs with new offerings being added each year. In most cases, the size of the car is directly proportional to the negotiating strength or position of the candidate. Hence, for indispensable talent, companies do not mind providing just about anything on wheels," said Atul Vohra, Transearch India Managing Partner.

Kris Lakshmikanth, CEO, Head Hunters India says, "There have been cases where cars have played a vital role in a make or break situation. An energy company had to negotiate for six months before they gave in to the demands of the desired candidate. Reason, he wanted a luxury sedan, at least on par with his last car if not more."

Moreover, mid-level executives, employees at mid-level managerial positions or key sales personnel are also getting offers of Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Skoda Laura, and mid-size sedans like the Hyundai i10 or Accent, Swift or Dzire and Skoda Fabia.

1 If a CEO demands a high end luxury car and gets it than what's the big deal. How
many leaders do we have anyway?

Head hunters must start looking at providing fringe benefits along with good
salaries too. So get busy, next it would be luxury appartments and plush offices
too. When you want the best, you need to dress the carrot up too.

3 I believe some of these highly paid CEO is reading it : I really do not mind if
you demand any thing on this world but then how can you bring the world to the
organization and the economy you are working in
see you are responsible for the brand and the market both if you expand them
that means you have justifed yourself
luxury is good if you have raised yourself above it make your oraganization and
economy feel your presence all over the world and compete with the world in
perks

5 A little error in my earlier post :
These CEOs can demand anything and everything they want but when their hard
working employees demand a good raise then they are at fault. :-) What a
contrast. :-)

7 Well it will not be a surprise to me that these CEOs will demand a portion of
Bukhingom palace for their residentialstay from their employers and employers
even venture to satisy them. Great India with Great ECOs.

8 Indians working on temporary visas such as H1Bs have been subject to such
withholding for US Social Security and Medicare (both of which can be availed
only upon retirement). A lot of them forfeit their retirement funds thus
withheld when they return to India.

Rather than resorting to a similar practice in India, the Indian government
should consider lobbying for governments of countries with large Indian
temporary workers such as the US to do away with withholding retirement funds at
least till the worker applies for permanent residency.

10 So? Why can't the CEO have her car? After all she is the CEO.

What is this article trying to say? I suspect this is more of the same
sensationalizing that Silicon India is prone to in the name of reporting on
current trends. Guys, if you cannot find something good to write, don't!
