Quit or relocate: Yahoo! to employees

Chennai: Followed by Bangalore-based 24/7 Customer forcing to relocate or find alternative jobs for more than 400 employees, now Yahoo! India asks its editorial team to join the company's Bangalore office or exit.

A Times of India report states that the decision is not known. However the sources said that the company has given short notice to Chennai 10 member team, which contributed editorial content to Yahoo! India. The 10 people were employed with a Bangalore based private news syndicate, which had an office in Chennai. Besides, it is learnt that Yahoo! terminated a technical support agreement with a software services company as well.

An employee of Yahoo's Chennai office confirmed the development. "Yahoo has offered to absorb them into the organization if they are willing to relocate," he told The Times of India, on condition of anonymity.

A spokesperson for Yahoo India said, "Yahoo routinely consolidates its operations for better scale and growth. We currently have 3 employees at our Chennai office and are relocating them into our other facilities. The Chennai office was inherited through an acquisition some time ago and this relocation is part of our integration plan for better scale. We are aggressively hiring and continue to grow in India."

The move comes close on the heels of Keane India axing 400 jobs across its centers in India.

Comment 27: This is terrible. It is not to work in MNCs than working like a slave for them.

Please remember its only because of I.T that you all are able to brag and comment such statements. Nobody asked you to go and join these MNCS... its on your own accord because of the money they pay you that you go and join them.

Stop this idiosyncracy.

I have put the above comments in QUOTES coz i want to reply

Comment 8: Hello People,
Rules and Stuff .. I don't think its going to happen in India. India is known for its population power. If you don't make use of the opportunity, there are 100s waiting to grab the same deal. Its IT and changes keeps on happening as the strategies changes day by day. It totally depend on you an Individual make use of it or not.

Comment 10: We, in India, must realise that in any outsourced job, the 'stability' is not inherent in the employment. Our mind-set of sarkari babudom too needs to be changed.
On the contrary the person seeking employment must look at earnings in the medium term. Obviously it must be planned and not blown up through indiscriminate spendings.
It is also important that the individual must take stock of the long term prospect. I know it is difficult for a 21 year old to plan his life. Not only it can be done but in the global context his counter part in the developed country takes charge of his/her life at the age of 18.
Good Luck!!

Comment 12: Well Every one Speaking about Chennai...
Does every one speak the Opportunity they had with when they boarded Yahoo...
When the company is in Downfall..people speak about it like this...
every one remember that "It market " is downfall... and at least Yahoo has respect to their employees and given an opportunity ............

every one plse think positive...
Negative speaking is just presenting yourself in a wrong way..

Thanks..

Comment 13:
I think there is nothing wrong or companies abandoning the employees or something because, when we sign our offer letter it is clearly mentioned by an employer that the employee would be posted or moved to any of the locations as per the organization requirements.
Question to be asked to the all the employees would they not be willing to get relocated if they are being sent to U.S. or any other European countries then why no to this.
We need to also understand that these companies are at least relocating there employees, there are many Software & BPO Organizations sacking off there employees saying the project is not making profits or on performance basis even when there performance was good.

No heart feeling guys, I think your organizations are far better than those organizations, because you still have a job. Imagine those who have been sacked and getting a job in another organization is not so easy for them.

I am an Ops Manager for an IT company in Bangalore, who has sacked some of his best Team Leads and Team Members stating these stupid reasons.

Sandy

Comment 14: I think government of India should interviene and revise it employee policy for the companies / corporate. This is revised by other countries too. This will help us in all better ways to work. India should also bring 5 Days a weak culture as mandatory to be followed by every Employer.

Comment 15: Both Bangalore and Chennai are good places to live in. Companies have various strategies to relocate. There are companies which have operations both in Chennai & Bangalore. Based on cost, talent availability etc., these companies also consolidate their real estate because of operational cost. So, let us not blame one company or one place. Let us be practical in understanding the requirements. It is our job that feeds us and our family. If you are not happy, try for another suitable job in a location that fits you.

Comment 16: We are all slaves till we learn to live with less - can't rem who said this but someone famous said it. No one is forcing us to live beyond our means. In this everchanging world one has to look at life like this could be the last day of employment with the current company because of market dynamics. This will help us stay away from being slaves to our salary

Comment 17: Hey People, It's not about the bad strategy or Hot Climate.it's all about Politics of Yahoo....Yohoo now-a-days have lost it's position from the market so they are cutting down their cost by giving their employees no alternative....cuz they know employees will ultimately leave and thats what yahoo wants.....They are not in the position to Afford employees....so stop fighting amongst yourselves and understand.....the company politics. And as far as the Climate is concerned....we in India have all the possible climates that the world have so we can adapt anywhere and everywhere but that doesnt mean we leave our Native Forcefully.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment 18: This had to happen. The BPO bubble had to burst some day... More tough times ahead, please dont get me wrong, with phillipines and other countries breathing down the throat, this was bound to happen... Now we are getting to know what true liberalisation means !!!!!!!!

Comment 19: Priyank

What makes you think that Chennai is not a place to live in? Just because one sweats, doesn't mean Chennai is bad city. You must be sent to high school first to enable you learn English language. No matter even if you are earning lakhs, if you are biased for / against places, you can't write few lines in english without a mistake, you would not prosper.

Comment 20: There is only one way to tackle this - Be Organized. They are utilizing this unorganized sector by laying off people one fine day.
Like some one mentioned, think of forming union of IT sector employees in India so that companies cannot impose their wishes when ever they want.

Comment 21: Hi Priyank,
Please get your language and grammar right before you speak ill of Chennai.

Comment 23: It is very unethical to ask the employees to relocate or search for another job after losing a contract. Why the company does not have other alternative for the employees instead?
Posted by : nritya - Thursday, July 24, 2008

Comment 24: It definately make sense for any company to ratinalise their operations. Office only for 10 people really doesnt work out.
That too in hot climate , bad climate place like Chennai..
Man how can even one live there!!
