Sydney: Indians have become the second largest group of skilled migrants arriving on Australian shores under the temporary skilled migration programme during 2007-2008, according to new data released Tuesday by Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Evans.
While almost a quarter of the temporary workers came from the UK, India came second with 14 percent followed by the Philippines at nine percent and South Africa at six percent.
To meet the severe national skills shortages, especially in professional occupations and highly skilled jobs, as many as 110,570 visas were granted under the temporary skilled migration programme last year, a 27 percent increase on the previous year's 87,310.
As many as 81 percent of 457 (work) visa holders were employed in professional occupations and highly skilled jobs with computing professionals, registered nurses, and business and information professionals being the top three listed occupations for temporary overseas workers.
The minimum salary Levels for 457 visa holders will increase by 3.8 percent beginning Aug 1 next, after remaining frozen for over two years. The average nominated base salary for the temporary workers is about A$73,100.
Evans emphasised that the programme is not a cheap labour scheme and the government would not tolerate the exploitation of workers.

Comment 1: Hi, I'm presently working as scientist in USA and things are fine with me, however our family is bugged up and feels for a good change and we are speculating Aus would be a good alternative. We wish to be close to India and still keep distance from it, because of too much crap there.

Comment 2: Hi folks,
Australia is a beautiful country to live and offers pretty good living conditions for its people whether temporary or permanent resident. It takes a while for a foreigner to adjust to Australian culture. I moved to Australia 4 years back and with in six months of arrival I got a good government job in law enforcement. I worked with many Australians but did not find any thing which made me feel being discriminated or under valued. I thing when visa is awarded some people feel as if they are invited to Australia for honeymoon or something like that. They expect that government will give them job or someone is waiting for them to offer them jobs comparable to their last job. We apply for immigration to Australia by choice and Australian government did not invite us to apply for immigration hence people willing to migrate to Australia must understand that they are doing so at their free will. They will have to mold them self to new environment not the other way round. They might have to struggle for some time ( as if they didn't have to struggle in India) but at the end of the day they will find appropriate jobs and will lead a good life provided they continue improving upon their employability. Best of Luck.

Comment 3: Even you migrate you will not get job immediately, you have to struggle a lot to find a house and for job, they are not going to give you job that easily as we get in india. They does'nt like indians... they like only europeans and americans only some people like indians... i have been in australia struggling for job for one year even i am skilled, even now i am struggling to find proper ful time job.. thats too bad. But officially they say lot of things, but its not true.
We are fools. I am also a fool to come here by leaving a good position in india.
All the best to everyone.
