Indian Reading League to improve Delhi kids' vocabulary
New Delhi: In a bid to improve the reading capability of schoolchildren, a Delhi-based NGO Thursday launched the Indian Reading League in the capital - an initiative which aims to make the kids' vocabulary richer by as much as 600 words.
Parvinder Kaur, project director of Katha whose brainchild this initiative is, said the programme is an attempt to fill the lacunae left behind by the classroom teaching in government schools in Delhi.
"Most of the children studying in government schools have a poor vocabulary. Even those in class 7,8 or 9 can't construct a proper sentence, which is a matter of great concern. This project - the Indian Reading League - is an attempt to fill those lacunae," Kaur told IANS.
The project has been launched in 50 slums in Delhi. A group, typically constituting 50 children will form a league, in each of these slums who will be taught by the NGO members.
The children will decide the name of their league themselves.
“Each group will have 50 children, in the age group of 3-13. Since all these children already attend school, they know the alphabets. We will try to improve their vocabulary and make it richer by at least 600 words.
